What the subscription pays for
According to HP, Instant Ink plans are based on the number of pages printed. The service connects printer registration with the supply of subscription cartridges. These cartridges are therefore part of an ongoing service; their usability cannot be explained by their ink level alone.

What the finding supports: Here we describe the manufacturer’s documentation for Germany. Specific prices, individual contractual cases, and other countries are outside the scope of this explanation.
What HP states about cancellation
The German FAQ explains that Instant Ink cartridges stop working after the end of the billing period in which the plan was cancelled. The terms describe deactivation and state that continuing to print requires regular HP cartridges compatible with the printer.
An important distinction follows: the end of usability of subscription cartridges is not the same as a printer becoming permanently unusable. Which cartridges a particular model supports must be checked against its own documentation.

What the finding supports: The German FAQ and contractual terms were retrieved again on 11 October 2026. This explanation refers to those manufacturer statements for Germany; it does not assess individual contractual cases.
Why HP+ needs to be considered separately
HP+ has its own requirements, which HP describes in a separate FAQ. An article about cancelling Instant Ink should not silently conflate these requirements with the subscription service. We therefore list the documentation separately.

What the finding supports: Manufacturer documentation establishes what the provider requires or promises. It is not an independent assessment of its advertising or of the reliability of all devices.
